CHAPTER 4

What He ( صلى الله عليه وسلم ) Ordered The Muslim Regarding Leaving Off Backbiting His Brother And Following His ‘Awrah,[1] And What Warnings Have Come About This

  1. Abu Barzah said that the Messenger of Allaah ( صلى الله عليه وسلم ) said:“O you people who believe with your tongues while faith has not entered your hearts! Do not backbite the Muslims and do not follow their ‘awrah, for whoever follows the ‘awrah of the Muslims, Allaah follows his ‘awrahuntil he exposes him in his own house.” [87] [It was recorded by Ahmad, Abu Dawood and others and it and it is saheeh, see Saheeh al-Jami‘ no. 7984]

Chapter 5

Mention Of His ( صلى الله عليه وسلم ) Statement:“Indeed If You Follow The ‘Awrah Of The Muslims You Will Corrupt Them.”

  1. Raashid bin Sa‘d narrated from Mu‘awiyyah said who: “I heard the Messenger of Allaah ( صلى الله عليه وسلم ) say: ‘Indeed if you follow the ‘awrah of the Muslims you will corrupt them, or you might corrupt them.'”[2] He said: “Abu ad-Dardaa' said: ‘It is a statement that Mu‘awiyyah heard from the Messenger of Allaah ( صلى الله عليه وسلم ) and Allaah benefited him by it.'” [95]
[It was recorded by Abu Dawud, Ibn Hibban, At-Tabarani in Musnad ash-Shamiyeen, Abu Nu‘aym in Hilyat al-Awliya' and others, it was graded saheeh by al-‘Iraqi in Takhreej al-Ihyaa', and by al-Albani in Saheeh al-Jaami‘ as-Sagheer no. 2295.]
  2. Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allaah ( صلى الله عليه وسلم ) said: “One of you sees a speck in the eye of his brother and he forgets the tree-trunk or stump in his eye.” [96] [It was recorded by Abu ash-Shaykh in Kitab al-Amthaal,[3] Ibn Hibbaan, Abu Nu‘aym in Hilyat al-Awliyaa' and others. It was graded saheeh by al-Albani in as-Saheehah no. 33, but in Saheeh Mawaarid az-Zamaan (no. 1549) he said: “What is more correct, or what is saheeh, is that it is mawqoof.”][4]

Footnotes
    Footnotes
  1. The meaning of “`awrah” here is what is hidden, like personal matters, or secrets, etc.
  2. Al-‘Azeemabadi said: “The doubt is from the narrators.” And all of its routes appear to be through Sufyan, from Thawr, from Raashid bin Sa ‘d from Mu ‘awiyah, and they all contain the doubt, so if it is from one of the narrators, it is not clear which of them.
  3. It is published in “The Book of Parables.”
  4. There is some disagreement over whether it is from the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم ) or just from Abu Hurairah. So take note. It was included out of preference, and Allah knows best.
  5. The author's Shaykh Sulaimaan bin `Isa al-Jawhari was mentioned by al-Khateeb in hisTaareekh: “I do not know except for good about his condition” and his Shaykh in the narration, `Abdur-Rahmaan bin Yunus, Ahmad is reported to have said about him: “I do not know about him except for what is good,” ad-Daaraqutni said: “There is no harm in him,” and Ibn Hibbaan mentioned him in ath-Thiqaat. His Shaykh in the narration is `Abdullah bin Idrees bin Yazeed, one of the narrators of the Six, and he is narrating it from Shu`bah (and others), from Waasil al-Ahdab from al-Maroor, all narrators of the Six. The first part of this narration (up to: “but do not tear her skin”) was recorded by al-Bayhaqi from one of the other routes of the author.
